Look back - with an eye to 2007

"I'll start in January." How many times have you heard - or said it yourself - during the Christmas holidays?

Now that another year has come and gone [they seem to fly by quicker as we get older, don't they?] it's time for us to look to the new year and what we hope it will bring.

But every year at this time, we also like to reflect on our lives and ponder the changes we may have experienced during the past year.

Some of us got new jobs or new homes. Some people may have been married and others may have been divorced.

Some may have welcomed a new addition - or two - to the family, while others have been forced to deal with the painful loss of a loved one.

For some, looking back on 2006 brings joy - for others, pain.

So, as we close the door on the old year, let's look to the new year with hope and resolve - regardless of how 2006 treated us.

This year, let's not repeat the same old resolutions that we never follow through on anyway. Let's aim to be healthy this year - physically and mentally - and leave it at that.

More importantly, let's resolve to learn from the lessons that 2006 taught us - good or bad.

As Times columnist Fred Moore asks on page 12 in today's issue, are those around us better off because of how we treated them during this past year?

If not, how can we fix that?

If we make one resolution this year, let's all aim to live by the Golden Rule.

Whether we're waiting in line at the mall, cooking dinner with our spouse, working with our colleagues or driving in rush-hour traffic, we all will benefit by being kind and gracious to others in the coming new year.

That's a 2007 we can all enjoy.
