Red hot Lewis-Clark tramples over UCFV
- Staff Reporter
In the first of five non-conference games over the holidays, Fraser Valley Cascade men lost 78-49 to Lewis-Clark State College Warriors Wednesday night in Lewiston, Idaho.
After a close first half in which the Cascades only trailed by eight points 40-32, Fraser Valley saw their shooting percentage take a nosedive to yield just 17 points.
The Cascades managed just six field goals in the second period as the Warriors roared to a 78-49 win.
"We hung right in there through three quarters of play but once we ran into foul trouble, they really managed to exploit us," said head coach Tom Antil.
Anthony Lao led the Cascades with 12 points in a losing effort, also notching seven rebounds. Fraser Valley was out-rebounded 50-41.
Joel Haviland and rookie Josh Sharpe each contributed seven points.
"It was a tough physical battle," said Antil. "We had too many turnovers - the same type of problem we suffered last time out against Trinity Western."
On Thursday night, it was basically the same story - the hot-shooting Warriors were too much for the Cascades, as Fraser Valley ended its two-game road series with a 100-61 loss.
Lewis-Clark shot 50.7 per cent (36-71), and managed to make 10-of-16 three-point attempts as the Cascades allowed an opponent to reach the century mark for the second time this season.
The Warriors needed 56 second-half points to pull themselves ahead of the Cascades for the 100-61 win.
Kyle Graves led the Cascades in scoring with 18 points, also adding eight rebounds in what head coach Antil described as "his best ball game of the season".
Making his second straight start, Joel Haviland netted 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Darren Johnson came off the bench to provide 10 points.
"Tonight we ran into a red-shot Lewis-Clark team," said Antil.
"We fell behind early and managed to play a very good second half but nonetheless they shot the lights out and out-played us."
The Cascades will now enjoy a brief Christmas break before making another road trip south of the border. Fraser Valley departs Dec. 28 for Oakland, California, participating in the Holy Names Classic.
